Tree Planting…

The winter chill has seen the last of the leaves fall from most of North East Victoria’s, and Albury Wodonga’s, deciduous trees.  Do you know what that means though?  That it’s time to plant more of them!  And that’s exactly what we have been doing at Southern Trees.  Winter is the perfect time to plant deciduous trees.  Trees are categorised into 2 types: evergreen and deciduous.  Deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter and enter their dormant phase, meaning they can be planted out as bare rooted or potted, and as young, or more mature trees with a couple of years of growth.  Each planting style requires skill to determine the correct location, hole size, and mulching requirements.  You can read more about planting deciduous trees here.

Recently, the Southern Trees team have been planting potted deciduous trees in our beautiful North East Victorian ranges, extending the Avenue of Honour in Cudgewa and planting new trees at the Tallangatta Triangles just to name a couple of locations.  It really is a good feeling to add trees to our landscape.  We refer to tree planting days as Legacy Days, as it will be the future generations who will benefit from the trees we are planting now.

Tree Transplanting…

Tree in the wrong spot?  Too close to the house, or not close enough for shade?  Is your tree failing to thrive in the spot you planted it a few years ago?  Well, transplant it!  Tree transplanting is the process of moving an existing tree to a new location and that was the call a client made to us at the start of winter.  On a truly stunning property overlooking the Hume Weir, we transplanted not 1, not 2, not 3, but a total of 5 trees into spots that better suited the homeowners, and the trees.  Like tree planting, transplanting a tree takes skill, and above all patience, to carefully separate the root ball from its surrounding soil.  We look forward to seeing how these trees enjoy their new spots in spring.

Tree Removals…

This tree removal was a doozy!  The London Plane tree in question was 80+ years old and located in Mitta Mitta.  The tree needed to be removed due to its closeness to the power lines and the road.  It was wet, it was cold, and it was muddy!  It was a big job, and we cannot thank the team enough for their efforts in removing this big guy.  To see the head coming down from this tree click here.  We feel that trees of this age and beauty deserve to be remembered.  To honour this tree, a local timber miller has collected slabs from the barrel and they will be used by the local shire, and shire residents, in future woodworking projects.
